Strategic Implementation of Iʿrāb Based on Standardized Patterns in Arabic Grammar Instruction

Abstract

The teaching of nahwu, particularly the application of Iʿrāb, remains problematic due to the predominance of rule memorization that provides limited support for structural and applicative understanding. As a result, many learners struggle to independently analyze Arabic sentence structures despite having learned grammatical rules. This study aims to critically examine the implementation of a standardized pattern-based Iʿrāb strategy in nahwu instruction at Ma’had Al-Jami’ah IAIN Kerinci. This study employs a qualitative approach with an interpretative field study design. Data were collected through participatory observation, instructional documentation, and source triangulation, and analyzed using reflective thematic analysis to identify strategic patterns, instructional stages, and pedagogical implications. The findings indicate that the standardized pattern-based Iʿrāb strategy is implemented through a systematic sequence: identifying syntactic positions, determining types of Iʿrāb, identifying grammatical markers, and explaining underlying grammatical reasons. This approach facilitates a more structured understanding of Arabic syntax, enhances learners’ confidence, and shifts nahwu instruction from rote memorization toward conceptual comprehension.
