Abstract

Abstract

This study reinterprets the concept of Imam Mahdi through a prophetic framework. Discussions of Imam Mahdi have often focused on an individual figure expected to emerge as a savior during periods of historical crisis. Such a view may sustain hope, yet it can also encourage passivity when believers entrust social recovery to an external figure. This article advances a substantive interpretation. Imam Mahdi is understood not only as an eschatological personage, but also as a symbol of a guidance system that upholds truth, justice, knowledge, and protection for vulnerable communities. The research applies library research and qualitative descriptive analysis. Its sources include the Qur’an, hadith, tafsir, Arabic dictionaries, and modern scholarship on messianism, Islamic eschatology, and prophetic religion. The findings indicate that, etymologically, Imam Mahdi denotes a leader who is guided and who provides guidance. In the social sphere, this meaning may be developed into ethical leadership and a knowledge system capable of freeing people from injustice. The prophetic framework therefore shifts Mahdi discourse from a passive myth of waiting toward active, rational, and transformative social praxis.
