Rasionalitas Gerakan Aligarh dan Reformasi Pesantren di Indonesia

This study analyzes the relevance of the educational values developed in the Aligarh Movement, initiated by Sayyid Ahmad Khan, to the reform of Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) in Indonesia. The research is motivated by the epistemological challenges faced by pesantren, including resistance to criticism, weak integration between religious sciences and modern knowledge, and and the need to strengthen institutional governance toward greater transparency and accountability.. Using a qualitative literature-based approach supported by Max Weber’s framework of rationalization, this study explores Khan’s conception of Islamic rationality as a conceptual foundation for strengthening critical reasoning, integrating religious and scientific knowledge, and enhancing social ethics within pesantren education. The findings indicate that Khan’s ideas offer a constructive model for reinterpreting the relationship between revelation, reason, and social reality, enabling pesantren to develop a more dialogical, open, and accountable educational paradigm. This study contributes to the broader discourse on Islamic epistemology and highlights the need for further empirical research on the implementation of Islamic rationality in contemporary Islamic educational institutions.
