Abstract

This synthesis highlights three core themes: (1) cognitive and structural interdependence, which describes how differences in syntax, vocabulary, and cohesion directly influence comprehension and reasoning; (2) genre as a cognitive framework, which highlights how understanding genre enhances information processing and meaning formation; and (3) variation and functional application, which emphasizes the significance of genre and register analysis in clinical rehabilitation, artificial intelligence, and language learning. This study, “A Systematic Literature Review of Registration and Genre Rules in Linguistic Studies,” examines the impact of language structure on cognitive processes in the context of communication, diagnosis, and education. This review integrates the results of 25 peer-reviewed articles published between 2020 and 2025 to illustrate the role of register and genre as cognitive and communicative frameworks. This is achieved through the utilization of functional linguistics, the examination of discourse, and cognitive linguistics. The study shows that register and genre are flexible systems that reflect how people think and interact, not just fixed sets of language rules. What makes this research special is that it combines ideas from language studies and how the brain works. Even though there are some limits because it used different languages and methods, the results are still very useful for learning languages, computer language research, and improving communication skills In short, this study shows how important it is to understand register and genre, since they help explain how language shapes, influences, and reflects the way people think.
