Abstract
This research discusses the dynamics of political party coalition formation in the 2024 elections in Indonesia, which is characterized by the emergence of three major coalitions to support presidential and vice presidential candidates. These coalitions were formed in response to a multiparty presidential system that requires the collaboration of political parties to create a stable government. This study focuses on two main aspects, namely whether the formation of coalitions leads to power consolidation or democratic partnerships, and what are the implications of grand coalitions for the quality of democracy, especially related to the mechanism of checks and balances. This research uses a qualitative-descriptive approach with secondary data from relevant documents and media. The results show that coalitions in the 2024 elections tend to be driven by political pragmatism and electoral calculations, while ideological similarities become less dominant, which can weaken the check and balance system and strengthen the oligarchy. Although there are efforts to build consensus programs between parties, this step is still not strong enough to balance power consolidation.
