Abstract
The digitalization of financial services through mobile banking has transformed transaction patterns, including within Islamic boarding school communities. This study aims to compare the benefits, challenges, and responses of student-santri in Jombang toward the use of Sharia and conventional fintech based on mobile banking. A qualitative approach was employed using open-ended questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with 16 fintech users. Data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that all respondents perceived mobile banking as beneficial for improving transaction efficiency, payment convenience, usage flexibility, and digital security through PINs, OTPs, and biometric authentication. However, respondents also experienced technical issues such as unstable internet connections, QRIS payment errors, slow application performance, and failed transactions. Sharia fintech was considered more aligned with Islamic principles, while conventional fintech was viewed as superior in speed and feature availability. Differences in user responses also emerged when transaction problems occurred, with Sharia fintech users emphasizing Sharia compliance and conventional fintech users prioritizing practical technical solutions. The study recommends improving digital service quality and strengthening Sharia financial literacy among students.
