Participatory Waste Audit pada Program Maritime Leadership Camp: Sampah Laut, Fisiologi Tubuh, dan Eco-theology Islam

Abstract

The problem of marine debris is an environmental issue that impacts coastal ecosystems and human health. This community service activity aims to increase awareness and understanding of coastal youth regarding the impact of marine debris on health and the environment through Participatory Waste Audit activities in the Maritime Leadership Camp program at Lowita Beach, Pinrang Regency, South Sulawesi. The method used was Participatory Action Research (PAR) with the stages of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. A total of 30 participants were divided into five groups to conduct a waste audit in a 10x10 meter coastal zone. Participants identified, categorized, and recorded the types of waste found, followed by a reflective discussion regarding waste sources, marine pollution routes, the impact of microplastics on body physiology, and human responsibility in protecting the environment from an Islamic ecotheological perspective. The results showed the discovery of 26 types of waste consisting of plastic, textiles, medical and hazardous waste, cosmetics, fishing equipment, and organic waste. Plastic waste was the most common type of waste found throughout the observation zone. In addition, medical waste and waste from several countries were found, indicating the influence of ocean currents on the distribution of coastal waste. This activity increases participants' understanding of the relationship between marine pollution and human health and raises awareness to maintain the coastal environment sustainably.
