Abstract

This study aims to examine the level of study hours, the level of academic achievement, and the effect of study hours on the academic achievement of students at the Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, Universitas Islam Negeri Alauddin Makassar. A quantitative causal-correlational approach was employed, involving 97 respondents selected through simple random sampling from a population of 3,439 active students, with the sample size determined using the Slovin formula. Data were collected through an online questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics and simple linear regression with the assistance of SPSS. The descriptive results show that the average weekly study hours was 25.90 hours (SD = 5.491), while the average Grade Point Average (GPA) reached 3.81 (SD = 0.173), indicating a fairly high and homogeneous academic achievement. However, the simple linear regression analysis revealed that study hours did not have a significant effect on academic achievement (t = -0.819, p = 0.415 > 0.05), with a correlation coefficient of only 0.074 and a coefficient of determination of 0.6%. These findings indicate that the quantity of study time alone is not a strong predictor of academic achievement, and that the quality of learning, time-management skills, learning motivation, and cognitive ability play a more dominant role. This study implies that academic interventions should focus more on improving the quality of the learning process rather than merely increasing the duration of study hours.
