Abstrak

Community health literacy in rural areas still faces challenges in integrating scientific knowledge with the utilization of local biological resources. The moringa plant, which grows widely in community environments, has high nutritional potential, yet its utilization is often limited to traditional knowledge without adequate scientific understanding. This community service activity aimed to revitalize health literacy through moringa plant education based on local potential in Bulu Ballea Hamlet, Pattapang Village, Tinggimoncong District, Gowa Regency. The program applied a participatory approach through contextual scientific education, reflective dialogue, and collaborative mentoring between the community service team and local residents. Evaluation was conducted using pre-test and post-test to measure changes in participants’ understanding, participatory observation to examine engagement dynamics, and community reflections and feedback to capture changes in attitudes. The results showed an improvement in community health literacy, indicated by an increase in the average knowledge score of participants from 53.8 to 82.3 and a stronger positive attitude toward utilizing moringa as a healthy food source in household consumption. Participatory discussions also revealed participants’ commitment to regularly process moringa and disseminate the information to other community members. These findings demonstrate that education based on local potential can strengthen the integration of scientific knowledge and community health practices. This activity confirms that community service can function as a pathway for the dissemination of biological science while simultaneously serving as a strategy for community empowerment in strengthening sustainable health literacy.
