Abstract

This article examines how religious moderation is practiced in the multicultural society of Labuan Bajo, West Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, and how these practices can be interpreted through maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah. The study responds to a central question: how can the protection of religious identity coexist with social solidarity in a community shaped by religious, cultural, and ethnic diversity? It employs a qualitative field-research design, combining empirical, sociological, normative-juridical, and theological approaches. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews with nine informants drawn from religious leaders, local government, and community members, and documentary analysis. The data were analysed through reduction, systematic presentation, and conclusion drawing, with credibility supported by triangulation. The findings indicate that moderation is expressed in respect for worship and religious freedom, interfaith cooperation, deliberation, mutual assistance, and the preservation of Manggarai local wisdom. Wae Mata illustrates these practices through neighbouring houses of worship, cross-religious youth networks, and community agreements to support families during important social events. The practices correspond particularly to ḥifẓ al-dīn and ḥifẓ al-nafs, while their broader social value can be understood through jalb al-maṣāliḥ and dar’u al-mafāsid. The article argues that a contextual model of moderation should connect ethical principles, public benefit, and local cultural institutions rather than rely solely on top-down religious messaging. This model offers a practical framework for community education, interfaith forums, and locally grounded policy.
