Abstract

Intoduction: Alpinia monopleura, a member of the Zingiberaceae family, is a plant species found in Southeast Sulawesi and has been traditionally used to alleviate muscle soreness. The rhizome contains bioactive compounds, including phenolics and flavonoids, which are believed to contribute to its anti-inflammatory activity. Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the anti-inflammatory activity of the methanolic extract of Alpinia monopleura rhizome. The anti-inflammatory activity was assessed in vitro using the Human Red Blood Cell (HRBC) membrane stabilization method, based on the extract’s ability to protect erythrocyte membranes against hypotonic solution-induced hemolysis. Result: The results demonstrated that the methanolic extract of Alpinia monopleura rhizome exhibited significant anti-inflammatory activity, as evidenced by its ability to stabilize red blood cell membranes. An increase in extract concentration corresponded to an increase in membrane stabilization. At the highest concentration tested, the methanolic extract of Alpinia monopleura rhizome showed 84.35% membrane stabilization, which was comparable to that of diclofenac sodium (88.16%). Conclusion: These findings suggest that the methanolic extract of Alpinia monopleura rhizome has promising potential for development as a natural anti-inflammatory agent.
