Abstract

This study examines the integration of Islamic ecotheological texts and local wisdom narratives preserved in Lontara’ as a foundation for developing a sustainable Islamic education framework. It responds to the ecological crisis by proposing an educational approach that combines Islamic theological principles with culturally embedded ecological values. Employing the sociology of literature and contextual hermeneutics, the study explores the relationship between key Islamic ecotheological concepts—khalīfah, amanah, and mīzān—and Bugis-Makassar values reflected in ade', pammase, and pangngadakkang. The findings reveal a strong epistemological and ethical convergence between Islamic ecotheology and Bugis-Makassar local wisdom in understanding the interconnected relationship among humans, nature, and God. These complementary value systems promote ecological responsibility, cosmic balance, and social harmony. Through intertextual analysis of religious texts and Lontara’ narratives, the study formulates a sustainable Islamic education model integrating Islamic spirituality, local ecological ethics, and environmental sustainability principles. This integrated framework enhances contextual and transformative ecological awareness while reinforcing environmental stewardship rooted in religious and cultural traditions. The study highlights the significance of multidisciplinary approaches in environmental education and recommends future empirical research to evaluate the implementation and effectiveness of this educational model across diverse educational institutions and community settings.
