Abstract

Abstract

The Iran–Iraq Conflict was one of the largest wars in the Middle East, taking place from 1980 to 1988 and influenced by various political, ideological, and global interests. This study aims to analyze the background of the Iran–Iraq conflict, the struggle for political and ideological influence between the two countries, and the involvement of major powers in the conflict. The research employs a qualitative method based on library research by utilizing various sources such as academic journals, books, articles, and relevant official documents. The findings indicate that the Iran-Iraq conflict was not only triggered by territorial and border disputes, but was also influenced by ideological differences following the 1979 Iranian Islamic Revolution, which raised Iraq’s concerns over the spread of revolutionary influence. In addition, the involvement of major powers such as the United States, the Soviet Union, as well as Western and Arab countries, demonstrated the existence of economic and geopolitical interests, particularly regarding political influence and control over the oil-rich Persian Gulf region. The conflict had significant impacts on the stability of the Middle East, international relations, and the social and economic conditions of both countries. Therefore, the Iran–Iraq conflict can be understood as a struggle for political influence, ideology, and global interests that were closely interconnected within the dynamics of international politics.
