This study aims to analyze the role of zakat and its usefulness as an Islamic public finance instrument in supporting sustainable development and its function as a means of reducing poverty in Indonesia, by reviewing aspects of zakat regulation and governance. The research method used in this study is a qualitative approach with a literature study, where the sources obtained are through various types of books or related scientific sources, as well as official data from zakat management in Indonesia. The results of this study show that zakat plays a very large role and has enormous potential, especially in efforts to reduce poverty and improve the welfare of the people. In Indonesia itself, there are already regulations governing zakat management institutions such as BAZNAZ and LAZ. However, despite the existing regulations, the optimization of the role of zakat still faces several challenges, such as the gap between potential and actual collection, the low level of public awareness regarding zakat payment, and many others. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen regulations and raise public awareness regarding zakat payment.
