Abstract
This study aims to identify the factors that drive street vendors at Talang Banjar Market in Jambi City to choose selling along the roadside despite the availability of designated stalls within the official market area, to analyze the implementation of Islamic business ethics among street vendors, and to examine the efforts of the Jambi City Government in managing and facilitating street vendors in accordance with Islamic business ethics principles. This study employs a qualitative approach. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Informants included street vendors, registered merchants inside the market, Talang Banjar Market management, the Jambi City Department of Industry and Trade, and the Civil Service Police Unit. Data were analyzed through the stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal four primary factors that drive street vendors to sell along the roadside: (1) significantly lower rental and operational costs compared to official stalls; (2) proximity to target consumers, providing greater customer potential; (3) more strategic locations with higher accessibility; and (4) a marked decline in revenue experienced by vendors who attempt to operate within the official market. From the perspective of Islamic business ethics, street vendor behavior reflects suboptimal implementation across four key principles, namely honesty (as-shiddiq), justice ('adl), responsibility, and tawhid (monotheism).
