Abstract

This study aims to explore the linguistic connotations of mercy as presented in the Holy Qur’an, with particular attention to its semantic depth and ethical implications. Mercy is one of the most profound attributes that Allah has ascribed to Himself, to His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and to the المؤمنين (believers). Its presence fosters inner peace, strengthens social bonds, and nurtures compassion among individuals.

The Qur’an employs a rich variety of linguistic forms and expressions to convey the concept of mercy, reflecting its multiplicity of meanings and its central role in Islamic teachings. Likewise, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized mercy in his Sunnah, encouraging believers to embody it in their daily lives.

This research adopts a descriptive-analytical approach to examine the various connotations, rhetorical features, and semantic nuances of mercy in the Qur’anic discourse. It also investigates the patterns of exaggeration (صيَغ المبالغة), plural forms, and aesthetic expressions associated with the term.

The findings reveal that mercy is a comprehensive moral value with diverse connotations in the Qur’an. It is not only a divine attribute but also a fundamental ethical quality instilled in human beings, guiding their interactions and shaping their character.
