Abstract

Physical characteristics are important factors that determine the quality, storage stability, and effectiveness of Urea Molasses Mineral Blocks (UMMB) as a feed supplement for ruminants. Information regarding the effect of tannin inclusion on the physical characteristics of UMMB is still limited. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of varying proportions of tannin and rice bran on the moisture content, density, water absorption capacity, and specific gravity of UMMB. A Completely Randomized Design (CRD) was employed with four treatments: P0 (0% tannin and 20% rice bran), P1 (5% tannin and 15% rice bran), P2 (10% tannin and 10% rice bran), and P3 (15% tannin and 5% rice bran), with five replications per treatment. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by Duncan’s multiple range test at a 5% significance level. The results showed that changes in the proportions of tannin and rice bran significantly affected (P<0.05) all observed parameters. Increasing the proportion of tannin increased moisture content from 7.85% to 11.66% and water absorption capacity from 0.55% to 8.30%, while density decreased from 1.39 g/mL to 1.08 g/mL and specific gravity decreased from 1.01 g/mL to 0.73 g/mL. It is concluded that an increase in the proportion of tannins followed by a decrease in the proportion of rice bran is able to modify the physical characteristics of UMMB, with the treatment of 5% tannins and 15% rice bran producing the best physical characteristics.
