ELDERLY LEFT BEHIND: THE TRAPS OF POVERTY, VIOLENCE, AND ISOLATION IN OLD AGE (MAKASSAR CITY)

Abstract

Abstract: The increasing number of elderly population in Indonesia presents various complex and multidimensional social problems. This study aims to analyze the main issues faced by the elderly, including poverty, neglect, violence, social isolation, and health problems. The analysis results show that elderly poverty is a structural condition formed throughout the life cycle due to limited access to education, formal employment, and social protection. Neglect and violence against the elderly tend to increase along with changes in family structure and the weakness of the state protection system, while social isolation has been shown to have a significant impact on physical and mental health. In addition, the high prevalence of chronic diseases and multimorbidity indicates that elderly health issues require a comprehensive approach. Therefore, integrated interventions are needed through strengthening the social protection system, developing community-based services, and increasing the role of various parties in ensuring the sustainable welfare of the elderly.
