BINTU ASY-SYĀṬI' IN AT-TAFSĪR AL-BAYĀN LĪ AL-QUR'ĀN AL-KARĪM (METHODOLOGICAL ANALYSIS AND APPLICATION OF INTERPRETATION)

Bintu Al-Syāṭi dalam al-Tafsīr al-Bayān lī Al-Qur’ān al-Karīm (Analisis Metodologi dan Aplikasi Penafsiran)

Abstract

This study discusses the methodology and application of Bintu ash-Syāṭi' interpretation in her work At-Tafsῑr Al-Bayān Li Al-Qur'ān Al-Karῑm when interpreting the verses of the Qur'an. This type of research is library research. The approach used in this research is the approach of tafsir science to analyze the theme of the discussion. The results showed that ‘Ā'isyah Bintu ash-Shāti’ was recorded as the only female commentator. The basis of Bintu ash-Shāṭi's method of interpreting the Qur'ān stems from the statement of the classical mufassirs that: The Qur'ān yufassiru ba'ḍuhu ba'ḍan. Amῑn al-Khūlῑ, her lecturer and husband, was the most influential figure in her interpretation of the Qur'ān. In terms of its form, the book of At-Tafsῑr Al-Bayān Li Al-Qur'ān Al-Karῑm is categorized as tafsῑr bi ar-ra'yῑ. As for the methodology, Bintu ash-Syāṭi' uses the mauḍū'ῑ (thematic) method, which is quite different from the thematic concept of previous interpretation scholars who collect and discuss Qur'anic verses that have similar themes, while the thematic concept of Bintu ash-Syāṭi' is to discuss one surah completely. And applicatively, Bintu ash-Shāṭi uses the tah}lῑlῑ method (detailed description) when presenting the interpretation of the surah in his book, which explains a surah by dividing it into two aspects: 1) the interpretation of the surah which includes; naming, categorization, order and cause of revelation, and 2) the interpretation of the verse which includes: verse-by-verse interpretation, vocabulary meaning, verse relationship (munāsabah) and functional words which are sometimes accompanied by rhetorical, literary or linguistic sense explanations. The approach used by Bintu ash-Syāṭi' in her tafsir is the language approach (lugawῑ) as well as the style of her tafsir. This research is expected to enrich the insight of contemporary tafsir methodology and give birth to a new methodology in interpreting the verses of the Qur'an to make it easier to understand, especially in the Indonesian context.
