Abstract

Rapid urbanization triggers urban sprawl and land-use inefficiency. The compact city approach offers a solution through urban activity intensification. This study examines urban activity intensification in the Yogyakarta Urban Area as a key aspect of achieving urban compactness. The research applies a deductive–quantitative approach with 72 urban villages as the unit of analysis. The intensity index was constructed from four variables: land-use diversity, availability of public facilities, residential land percentage, and built-up land percentage. The findings reveal that central Yogyakarta has the highest intensification, supported by dominant built-up areas, diverse land uses, and adequate facilities, while urban and sub-urban segments show lower levels. All variables significantly influence the intensity index, with built-up land percentage emerging as the most dominant factor. These findings highlight that urban activity intensification supports urban compactness and provides a basis for spatial planning to control urban expansion and promote more efficient and sustainable urban development.
