Reading Difficulties Among Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Students from the Perspective of the Simple View of Reading

Reading ability is a fundamental competency that is crucial for supporting successful learning at the Madrasah Ibtidaiyah level. However, there are still students who experience reading difficulties, both in recognizing words and understanding the content of what they read. This study aims to describe the reading difficulties of third-grade students at Madrasah Ibtidaiyah based on the Simple View of Reading perspective, which emphasizes two main components: decoding and language comprehension. This study employs a qualitative approach using a descriptive method. Data collection techniques included observation, interviews, and documentation involving the school principal, third-grade teachers, and six third-grade students at MI Islahul Muta’allim, selected using purposive sampling. Data analysis utilized the Miles and Huberman model through the stages of data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of the study indicate that students still face difficulties in the aspects of decoding and language comprehension. These difficulties include challenges in distinguishing similar-looking letters, stuttering while reading, insufficient attention to punctuation marks, as well as difficulties in understanding the content of the text, identifying the main idea, and retelling the text’s content. Reading difficulties are influenced by internal and external factors. The school has implemented efforts through additional reading tutoring, specialized support, step-by-step reading practice, and collaboration with parents.
