Abstract

The Maudu Lompoa tradition is a form of celebration of the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad SAW which has strong religious, cultural and social values in the lives of the people of Paropo Village, Makassar City. Amid the current modernization and social change of urban communities, the continuity of this tradition depends to a large extent on the level of participation of the community as the main actors in cultural preservation. This research aims to analyze the forms, mechanisms and supporting and inhibiting factors for community participation in preserving the Maudu Lompoa tradition in Paropo Village. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach with the research location in Paropo Village, Panakkukang District, Makassar City. Data was collected through in-depth interviews, direct observation and documentation, with informants including traditional leaders, religious leaders, community leaders, implementing committees, sub-district governments, cultural figures/cultural anthropologists, and local communities. Data analysis is carried out through the stages of data reduction, data presentation and drawing conclusions, and is tested for validity using source triangulation techniques and methods. The results of the study show that community participation in the Maudu Lompoa tradition takes place actively and sustainably at all stages of the activity, from planning, preparation, implementation, to evaluation. Forms of community participation include physical and energy participation, material and financial participation, social and moral participation and participation of young people. The Maudu Lompoa tradition not only functions as a religious ritual, but also as a social space that strengthens solidarity, mutual cooperation and the cultural identity of the Paropo people. Factors supporting participation include cultural awareness, religious values, social solidarity, as well as support from traditional leaders, religious leaders and sub-district governments. Meanwhile, inhibiting factors include time constraints due to economic activity, limited funds, and low interest among some young people. This research concludes that preserving the Maudu Lompoa tradition in Paropo Village is an effective form of community-based cultural preservation. The active and flexible participation of various elements of society keeps this tradition alive, adaptive to the times, and relevant as part of the cultural and religious identity of the local community.
