Abstract

Abstract
A wife’s decision to work is often perceived merely as a solution to a family’s economic hardship or financial insufficiency. However, Islamic family law offers a different perspective, viewing such an arrangement as a form of cooperation with positive value. This study aims to analyze the factors that lead wives to work and to examine how Islamic family law interprets this practice. Employing a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) methodology, the study analyzes 15 selected scholarly sources. The findings indicate that the primary reasons for a wife’s employment are the husband’s insufficient income and the rising cost of living. A wife’s work is not an obligation but rather a supportive contribution to address the family’s unmet needs, rooted in the principle of mutual cooperation. Furthermore, this arrangement is based on the wife’s own willingness and the husband’s consent. Under Islamic family law, a wife’s employment does not diminish the husband’s role as the head of the household, nor does it absolve him of his obligation to provide for the family’s financial needs (nafaqah). Consequently, a wife’s decision to work is considered a legitimate form of cooperation consistent with the principles of Sharia, provided that certain conditions are met and can serve as an effective means to ensure the continued wellbeing of the family.
