Abstract
The blind box phenomenon has become a rapidly growing digital consumption trend among young people, offering an element of surprise and uncertainty regarding product content at the time of transaction. This study aims to identify the motivational factors of Muslim consumers in purchasing blind boxes and to analyze the conformity of this practice with the principles of Islamic Economics, particularly the elements of gharar and maysir. The study employs a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation of Muslim consumers and blind box sellers at the WTC Batanghari shopping center in Jambi City, then analyzed using Miles and Huberman's stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, with data validity maintained through technique triangulation. The results indicate that blind box purchase motivation is dominated by curiosity, social media trends, entertainment and collecting activities, and a tendency toward impulsive buying, with some informants experiencing post-purchase cognitive dissonance. From an Islamic Economics perspective, the blind box practice contains an element of gharar fahish because the object of the contract is unknown with certainty at the time of transaction, an element of jahalah due to unclear product specifications, and a speculative element resembling maysir due to repeated purchases made in pursuit of rare characters. This practice also has the potential to encourage israf and tabdzir when carried out excessively. This study recommends strengthening Islamic consumption literacy among Muslim consumers and improving product information transparency among business actors.
