Pencemaran logam berat seperti tembaga (Cu) di perairan memiliki dampak serius terhadap lingkungan dan kesehatan manusia. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengembangkan adsorben ramah lingkungan berbasis kitosan yang diekstrak dari cangkang rajungan dan karbon aktif dari limbah tongkol jagung. Proses pembuatan kitosan meliputi tahap deproteinasi, demineralisasi, dan deasetilasi, yang menghasilkan kitosan dengan derajat deasetilasi tinggi sebesar 76%. Gugus fungsi yang muncul yaitu gugus hidroksil (–OH) dan amina (–NH₂) yang efektif untuk adsorpsi ion logam berdasarkan analisis data FTIR. Karbon aktif dari tongkol jagung dihasilkan melalui karbonisasi dan aktivasi dapat meningkatkan luas permukaan dan porositas material. Pengujian AAS menunjukkan kapasitas adsorpsi sebesar 60,26% terhadap ion Cu dari air sungai Tallo, Sulawesi Selatan. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa komposit kitosan-karbon aktif ini efektif, ekonomis, dan ramah lingkungan untuk mengurangi polusi logam berat di perairan. Dengan demikian, komposit ini memiliki potensi aplikasi besar dalam pengelolaan limbah air industri dan lingkungan perairan yang tercemar.
