Building Façade System as a Threshold Connecting Space and Time

Form and façade responses emerge from traces of the past and carry inherited legacies. The performance of the façade as both a connector and a separator between spaces constitutes the façade system as a physical boundary. Through visual representation, the threshold within the façade is understood as a mediator that facilitates the relationship between space and time. In its implementation, façade elements such as form, color, material, and ornament construct an image capable of evoking the atmosphere of the past in the present. This research aims to develop a new understanding of the threshold from the perspective of the façade by examining how façade systems and mechanisms function as mediators of space and time. The method employed is qualitative, consisting of a literature review and contextual analysis through an examination of the façade system and mechanisms of the Oude Stadhuis building in the Old Town area of Semarang. The analysis reveals that the façade holds a dual role as both a spatial mediator and a temporal mediator, positioning it as a dynamic system that fosters an awareness of the passage of time within architecture.
