Abstract

This study aims to identify the spatial and temporal distribution of earthquakes in the PGR Region IV Makassar during the period January–April 2024. A quantitative descriptive approach was applied using secondary seismic data obtained from the earthquake catalog of the Regional Earthquake Center (PGR) IV Makassar, Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (BMKG). The analyzed parameters include origin time, epicenter coordinates, hypocenter depth, magnitude, and felt earthquake reports. Data processing and verification were conducted using SeisComP4, while Microsoft Excel was utilized for data filtering and statistical analysis, and QGIS for spatial mapping of earthquake distribution. The results show that a total of 1,294 earthquake events occurred during the study period, dominated by shallow earthquakes (<60 km) with magnitudes ranging from 2≤M<3. The highest number of earthquakes was recorded in April (406 events), whereas the lowest occurred in February (254 events). Spatial distribution analysis indicates that earthquake clusters are strongly associated with active tectonic structures, particularly the Palu–Koro Fault system and its surrounding fault zones. These findings provide important insights into the regional seismicity characteristics of Sulawesi and can serve as a scientific basis for earthquake hazard assessment and disaster mitigation planning in the PGR IV Makassar region.
