Londo iha, or elopement marriage, remains a living customary practice among the Mbojo people of Bima City, yet it frequently triggers social tension between the families of the bride and groom because parental consent is absent prior to the elopement. This study aims to describe and analyze the customary mediation process undertaken by community leaders, religious figures, and local government officials in resolving londo iha marital disputes in West Rasanae Sub-district, Bima City, and to identify the factors supporting and inhibiting its effectiveness. A qualitative case-study approach was employed; data were collected through in-depth interviews with customer leaders, religious figures, disputing families, and sub-district officials, complemented by observation and documentation. The findings show that londo iha mediation unfolds through four sequential stages: the delivery of notification by the groom's family envoy, an initial approach accompanied by an apology, core deliberation led by a customary leader acting as a neutral mediator, and the affirmation of agreement through customary procession and marriage contract. The effectiveness of mediation is determined by the mediator's social legitimacy, the willingness of both families to prioritize relational restoration over formal settlement alone, and the harmonization of customary values with Islamic law and state law. The novelty of this study lies in its systematic mapping of the structure and stages of Londo IHA mediation in an urban sub-district setting, a dimension largely unexplored in previous literature that has predominantly focused on cultural meaning and social sanction. The study recommends strengthening the capacity of customary mediators and documenting mediation outcomes to strengthen legal certainty and the sustainability of customary mediation amid the modernization of Bima society.
