This study examines how Qur’anic qirāʾāt (readings), particularly the reading attributed to Ibn Kathīr, inform al-Shāfiʿī jurisprudential interpretations of fidyah (expiatory compensation) and their articulation in the official fatwas of Brunei Darussalam. Although previous studies have examined qirāʾāt and fidyah separately, their intersection in madhhab-based legal reasoning and contemporary fatwa formulation remains underexplored. Focusing on the expression fid-yatun ṭaʿāmu in Qur’an 2:184, this study investigates its interpretation within the al-Shāfiʿī school and its reflection in Brunei’s fatwa framework. Using qualitative document analysis, the study examines selected Qur’anic commentaries, authoritative al-Shāfiʿī legal texts, and official Bruneian fatwas concerning fidyah. The findings indicate that Brunei’s fatwas generally reflect al-Shāfiʿī jurisprudential reasoning, particularly regarding fidyah as a food-based obligation for individuals who are unable to fast under legally recognized circumstances. The analysis further demonstrates that Qur’anic reading traditions provide a linguistic and interpretive basis for understanding the relevant verse, while the al-Shāfiʿī madhhab mediates the translation of scriptural interpretation into practical legal rulings. Brunei’s fatwa framework subsequently contextualizes these rulings within contemporary religious administration. This study contributes to Islamic legal scholarship by illustrating how qirāʾāt can function as interpretive resources in madhhab-based jurisprudence and contemporary fatwa formulation. It also highlights Brunei Darussalam as a case for examining the continuity and institutional application of the al-Shāfiʿī madhhab in contemporary Muslim societies.
