Abstract

White light-emitting diodes (LEDs) can operate as photodetectors when reverse biased, offering a simple alternative to dedicated light sensors. This study designs and characterizes a white LED light sensor using a 10 MΩ pull-up resistor and the 10-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC) of an Arduino Uno. A dimmable lamp served as a variable light source, while a digital lux meter served as the reference instrument. Sensor output voltage was recorded at six dimmer levels corresponding to 13–1789 lux, and the calibration relationship was evaluated using linear regression. The resulting calibration equation was Lux = −593.79V + 2833.94, with R² = 0.9155. The sensitivity magnitude was 1.684 mV/lux, and the theoretical ADC-based resolution was 2.90 lux/bit. At a reference intensity of 861 lux, the sensor produced 838.77 lux after calibration, corresponding to a point error of 2.58% (point accuracy of 97.42%). Seven repeated measurements at the same illumination level yielded a mean of 809.08 lux, a standard deviation of 48.73 lux, and a relative standard deviation (RSD) of 6.02%. The maximum hysteresis was 0.53 V, equivalent to 15.36% of the full-scale output. These results demonstrate that a reverse-biased white LED can be implemented as a low-cost, laboratory-scale light sensor, although its repeatability and hysteresis at high illumination require improvement through shielding, settling-time control, and digital signal processing.
