Abstract

This study aims to analyze the distribution and characteristics of seismicity in the Regional Earthquake Center (PGR) IV area in May 2024. The data used in this study were obtained from the BMKG earthquake catalog during the observation period, comprising a total of 465 earthquake events analyzed based on location, depth, magnitude, and occurrence time. A descriptive analysis was conducted, while the spatial distribution of earthquake events was visualized using QGIS software with reference to relevant active fault structures. The results show that the seismicity was dominated by shallow earthquakes with depths of <60 km, accounting for 433 events (93.12%), followed by intermediate-depth earthquakes at 60–300 km with 31 events (6.67%), and deep earthquakes at >300 km with 1 event (0.22%). In terms of magnitude, earthquakes with magnitudes of 2 ≤ M < 3 were dominant, accounting for 315 events (67.74%). The predominance of relatively low-magnitude earthquakes generally reflects a frequency–magnitude distribution characteristic of the Gutenberg–Richter relationship, although the parameters of this relationship were not specifically calculated in this study. Spatially, earthquake events tended to cluster around several regional tectonic structures, including the Palu–Koro Fault, Matano–Sorowako Fault, and Balantak Fault. An increase in earthquake occurrence was also identified on 30 May 2024 in the Tojo Una-Una and Sorowako areas, exhibiting characteristics of a clustered sequence of earthquakes (swarm). The observed seismicity pattern indicates a relationship between the spatial distribution of earthquake events and regional tectonic conditions; however, establishing a causal relationship between individual earthquake events and specific fault structures requires further analysis. These findings provide an overview of the temporal, depth, magnitude, and spatial characteristics of seismicity in the PGR IV region and may serve as supporting information for seismic monitoring and disaster mitigation studies in Sulawesi.
