Abstrak

This study aims to analyze the distribution and characteristics of seismicity in the Regional Earthquake Center (PGR) IV area during May 2024, based on field practice activities at the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Regional IV Makassar. Earthquake data were obtained from the BMKG catalogue and processed descriptively using QGIS software to map the spatial distribution of events, and to examine the variation in depth, magnitude, and daily occurrence. The results show that 465 earthquakes were recorded during the observation period, dominated by shallow earthquakes (< 60 km) with 433 events, followed by intermediate-depth earthquakes (60–300 km) with 31 events, and one deep earthquake (> 300 km). Most events had magnitudes in the range of 2 ≤ M < 3 (315 events), reflecting a pattern consistent with the Gutenberg–Richter relationship. The spatial distribution follows major active fault systems, with clusters identified around the Palu–Koro Fault, the Matano and Sorowako Faults, and the Balantak Fault, while a notable earthquake swarm was recorded around Tojo Una-Una and Sorowako on 30 May 2024. These findings indicate that seismic activity in the PGR IV region is strongly controlled by regional fault systems and subduction dynamics, and highlight the importance of continuous monitoring and structured mitigation efforts to reduce earthquake and tsunami risk in the area.
