Abstract

This study aims to discuss nationalism and religious moderation in Indonesia which is focused on the contribution of Nahdlatul Ulama to the development of the nation from the perspective of Islamic political thought. An important study in the midst of the threat of ideology and group movements that are anti-Pancasila in the name of a certain religion. The study uses a qualitative method by analyzing it with Islamic political theory. The data analyzed refers to literature studies in the form of articles, books, and various studies related to the focus of the discussion. This study concludes that NU as a religious organization has a significant contribution to nationalism and religious moderation in Indonesia. These contributions are not only at the conceptual level but also the implementation of the state and national politics, democracy and nationalism. According to NU, the relationship between religion and the state refers to the concept of hubbul watan minal iman (love for the homeland is part of faith). NU is based on the madhhab ahlusunnah wal aljamah, a very moderate school in Islam. So that based on this, NU does not have ideological constraints when it comes to dialectics about concepts; state, nationalism, democracy and Pancasila. The values developed by NU are tawazun (balance), tasamuh (tolerance), tawasut (moderate), and i'tidal (fair). In fact, NU is aleading organization in defending Pancasila as the nation's philosophy in the midst of the threat of radical ideology. In the context of Islamic political thought, NU is of the view that the relationship between religion and the state is a symbiotic relationship, which is complementary and mutually reinforcing, not formalistic, let alone secular.
