Abstract

This study aims to analyze the authenticity and meaning of the hadith concerning the Prophet's exhortation to plant a seedling even when the Day of Judgment is imminent through the Ma'ānī al-Ḥadīth approach, to construct the eco-theological values embedded within it, and to examine its relevance to fostering ecological awareness in contemporary society. This research employs a qualitative method with a library research design. Primary data consist of the hadith narrated by Imam Aḥmad regarding planting a seedling along with its supporting narrations, while secondary data are drawn from hadith commentaries, classical and contemporary works on ʿUlūm al-Ḥadīth, Islamic ecotheology literature, and peer-reviewed scholarly publications. The analysis was conducted through takhrīj al-ḥadīth, sanad and matn criticism, linguistic and historical analysis, and interpretation based on Yusuf al-Qaradawi's Ma'ānī al-Ḥadīth approach integrated with the perspective of Maqāṣid al-Sharīʿah. The findings reveal that the hadith possesses authoritative status as a legal proof (ḥujjah) and embodies eco-theological values, including the concepts of khilāfah, ecological stewardship, sustainability, moral responsibility, and ecological piety. These values are highly relevant to strengthening Islamic environmental ethics, developing faith-based environmental education, and supporting sustainable development. This study concludes that the hadith serves as a conceptual foundation for advancing the paradigm of Islamic ecotheology in responding to contemporary global environmental challenges through an integrative and maṣlaḥah-oriented framework.
